Diary of a Mad Bride by Laura Wolf

This has been my favorite book this year. It is so appropriate because I have been involved in 3 weddings this year and have been invited to an additional two this spring. This author has a great comic voice. I love all the characters. It's told in diary format, so it's easy to find places to stop, but hard to put down!!!

Geisha by Liza Dalby

I was a bit disappointed in this book. I loved Memoirs of a Geisha, which while fiction, richly described the life of a geisha. This book is nonfiction based on the experiences of the only American to ever be accepted into the geisha ranks. Her contemporary stories are contrasted with historical information, but I found that the book sometimes seemed to drag. However, I found the relationships between the women and the roles that they play within the flower and willow world to be very interesting. This is obviously a culture that I have never experienced--and I'm always interested in the women who are able to have power/respect in a society that normally discourages the advancement of women. My main complaint was that the ending was too abrupt. There was little closure.
