Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
I'm not a science fiction fan. I came across Neil Gaiman through my comic book collection. I love this book, even if it's full of stuff that I don't like. First off, it's dark. Very dark. The protagonist, Richard Mayhew, whines a lot and seems to lack a spine. Many of the characters in this book are creepy and dangerous. However, Gaiman creates a world within our world effortlessly. Richard has accidentally become part of this world, and it is through his eyes that the reader explores this unfamiliar territory. The Knight Bridge, which exacts its toll in souls, the floating market, but most of all the inhabitants, the Rat People, the dark ladies, everyone has their role and Richard is miscast. His goal is to get his life back. In order to do so, he is assisting Door, a girl whose family was brutally murdered.
The story is complex. The characters are well developed. There are surprises and twists. And there are no loose ends. All questions are answered. Apparently, the BBC made this book into a miniseries that is available on DVD. I would love to get my hands on it.
